Can Birds Eat Dark Chocolate (70-85% Cocoa)?
Dark chocolate is lethal to birds even in minuscule amounts. The methylxanthines theobromine and caffeine cause acute cardiovascular and nervous system collapse in avian species, with rapid onset of vomiting, hyperexcitability, cardiac arrhythmia, and death. A crumb of a 70% cocoa bar can kill a small parrot. Because birds have very high metabolic rates, toxicosis develops within minutes. Absolute prohibition is the only safe approach.
